Last verified: October 8, 2026 · Official PMI page · All certifications

At a glance

  • Issued by: PMI
  • Best for: senior program managers coordinating multiple related projects
  • Process: application, payment, then a panel review by PgMP holders before you can book the exam
  • Exam: 170 questions, 240 minutes, in English and Simplified Chinese
  • Keep it active: 60 PDUs every 3 years

Eligibility (official requirement)

All experience must be within the past 15 years. Choose the set that matches your education:

  • Secondary diploma: 48 months of project management experience (or an active PMP) and 84 months of program management experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher: 48 months of project experience (or PMP) and 48 months of program experience
  • Bachelor's from a PMI GAC-accredited program: 36 months of project experience (or PMP) and 36 months of program experience

PMI's PgMP page doesn't state a training-hours requirement.

Fees

PMI does not publish one global exam price on its public certification pages. Its certification handbook says prices vary by membership status and region. Check the current fee in your PMI account before you apply. We don't list a figure here because we couldn't confirm it on an official page.

Keeping it active (official)

60 PDUs every 3 years. PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements handbook lists a renewal fee of US$60 for members and US$150 for non-members. That handbook is older than PMI's current Maintain page, which shows no amount, so confirm before you renew.

How to prepare (our recommendation)

  • Prepare for the panel review as seriously as for the exam. Describe your program experience in terms of benefits, governance and stakeholder alignment, not single-project delivery.
